Each country has its own health regulations, and failure to comply with them can have major consequences, such as the animal being refused entry or even a mandatory quarantine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if you are planning a trip with your canine or feline companion, it is essential that you organize the paperwork in advance and count on the help of a specialized veterinary team. At Balmesvet, we will accompany you every step of the way to make sure everything is in order.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who manages veterinary certificates in Barcelona?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. Board-certified clinical veterinarians<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are in charge of checking the animal&#8217;s health, microchipping it if it does not have one, administering the necessary vaccinations and issuing health certificates or passports. DACC Regional Offices (Generalitat de Catalunya)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When traveling outside the European Union, some countries require the veterinary certificate to be <\/span><b>officially validated.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In Catalonia, this function is performed by the <\/span><b>Departament d&#8217;Acci\u00f3 Clim\u00e0tica (DACC)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which reviews, signs and stamps the health certificate through its network of county offices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the state level, this ministry regulates the regulations on the export of pets. It has an online platform, <\/span><b>CEXGAN<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the certificates required for many countries outside the EU are processed. Although veterinarians do not directly access CEXGAN, they collaborate in the preparation of the certificates that are then officially validated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What steps to take when traveling with your pet<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. Find out about the requirements of the country of destination.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each destination has different rules. Some only require a passport and rabies vaccination, but others require specific certificates, specific deworming or even a rabies test. The first thing is:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check with the <\/span><b>embassy or consulate <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the regulations on the <\/span><b>MAPA website (CEXGAN).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to an experienced veterinarian, such as the Balmesvet team.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>2. ID and microchipping<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The microchip is <\/span><b>mandatory <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for all trips. It must be correctly registered and readable. Rabies vaccination<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is mandatory in most destinations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case of <\/span><b>first vaccination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at least <\/span><b>21 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must have passed before the trip. Some countries require more (28-30 days).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Boosters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must be up to date according to the <\/span><b>manufacturer&#8217;s schedule<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccination must be recorded in the <\/span><b>passport or certificate.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>4. Passport or international health certificate<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Travel within the EU: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>European passport <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issued by the veterinarian is sufficient.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Travel outside the EU: an international health certificate <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is required, which must be validated by the DACC. This document is adapted to the requirements of the country of destination and must be processed by CEXGAN.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>5. Rabies blood test (antibody assay)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some countries require this test to demonstrate that the rabies vaccine has generated sufficient immunity:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is performed by a blood test in an EU-approved laboratory.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result must be \u2265 0.5 IU\/ml.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it is the <\/span><b>first vaccination dose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one must wait 30 days after administering the rabies vaccine before serology is done.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many countries require the test to have been done 3 months prior to the trip.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If <\/span><b>properly boosted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every year, the result may be kept <\/span><b>valid indefinitely.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>6. Obligatory deworming<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some countries, such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Finland or Malta, require deworming against <\/span><b>Echinococcus multilocularis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tapeworm) between 24 and 120 hours prior to arrival.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>7. Certificate validation (outside the EU only)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The veterinarian completes the certificate and submits it through the CEXGAN platform. Then, the guardian must go to a <\/span><b>DACC office <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to officially validate it. This validation must be done <\/span><b>within 10 days prior to the trip.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>8. Returning to Spain<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your trip was to a country with a rabies risk:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must have previously done the blood test.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it was not done, you must <\/span><b>wait 3 months in that country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before doing it and being able to return.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The return must be done through an <\/span><b>Authorized Point of Entry (PEAC)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as the Barcelona
